With the valuable expertise of the SynAir-G partners and led by the Global Allergy & Asthma Excellence Network, the “SynAir-G Position Statement for the Improvement of Indoor Air Quality for Children” has been published in the “Indoor Air” journal.
The scope of our position statement is to shed light on the current evidence on indoor air pollution and its impact on health – particularly on children with allergies and asthma – and to provide an overview of the European regulatory framework. In particular, it discusses the important role of bioaerosols for indoor air quality (IAQ).
The position paper identifies knowledge gaps, challenges, and key unmet needs such as:
- The lack of a uniform EU-wide approach involving all stakeholders,
- The alignment of new initiatives with existing ones,
- A sound and appropriate legal basis,
- The definition of the interactions and boundaries between individual and systemic measures,
- Standardised criteria for classifying IAQ to design and evaluate the success of specific policy measures,
- Standardised target values and health-based exposure limits for a broader range of pollutants,
- Standards and recommendations for IAQ monitoring in different environments, building types and subpopulations,
- Real-time monitoring and modelling of pollutants,
- And, last but not least, translating scientific findings into practice and ensuring they are effectively disseminated to all relevant stakeholders and the wider public.
In conclusion, we present SynAir-G`s project goals and propose a roadmap for improving IAQ for children.
This statement is being published as the project enters its final phase, during which an increasing number of results will become available, with the aim of addressing as many of the challenges identified in the statement as possible.
